My Commitment to Coaching
I’ve been in full time Christian ministry for over 45 years. I serve in a local church, as a Bible study leader and am actively serving coaching pastors and missionaries and faith based leaders in business through Zoom calls and webinars. I’ve served as a Virtual Executive Pastor, meeting with the staff every week, giving assignments, maintaining a cadence of accountability while providing books and resources for developing a healthy ministry. I helped them in this six month transition to a permanent Executive Pastor. I loved every minute of this experience.
I could not have had this kind of ministry ten years ago. After 45 years in ministry there isn’t much I haven’t seen in ministry and that has given me valuable perspective in my coaching efforts. I’ve conducted leadership conferences in Slovenia, Ghana, Uganda and online with as many as 50 leaders in Grenada and Trinidad Island. I coach people scattered across the US as well.
My coaching ministry has no boundaries, except access to the Internet.
Here are 7 things that I commit to doing as I coach those who serve in ministry:
I will love and pray for pastors. Current responsibilities are massive. I pray that each pastor I serve will find a burden that is light and well fitting, laying each burden at the feet of Jesus during this corona-virus season.
I will look for ways to serve with videos and resources to help pastors develop leaders. I'm not a consumer, I'm a minister. I will look for people who seem to be a bit lost or disoriented and serve them by showing hospitality in my neighborhood and community.
I will continue to be a generous giver, because I know how few carry the financial responsibility in churches that are reaching the unchurched.
I will not listen to any criticism about the pastor or his family. I will confront gossip and direct people to practice Matthew 18:15, go to the person one on one if you have a problem, in the spirit of Galatians 6:1, seeking restoration.
If I see problems, I will not complain, but will go to those who can do something about it. Then I will pray bold prayers for those who are responsible to make healthy changes. I will trust that the same Holy Spirit who is in me is in those who are leading and have authority.
I will pray faithfully for pastors, wives and children, knowing that we have an enemy who wants to divide and destroy, starting with the home.
There are many ways to do ministry, methods are many, principles are few, methods always change, principles never do. I will choose to focus my energy on the never changing principles of worship, evangelism and discipleship, not sweating the every changing methods used to implement those principles. I will pray for pastors who are seeking to use creative means to connect with and care for the church when it is not possible to meet in person.
